I became a US citizen recently and I want to bring my elderly parents from India to live with me permanently. Can I sponsor both of them? What documents are needed and how long is the process typically?

Something to think carefully about beyond the immigration process: once your parents get permanent residence, they will have a 5-year waiting period before they can access most federal benefits like Medicaid or SSI. Private health insurance costs for elderly individuals in the US can be $800–$1,500 per month per person. Make sure you have a clear financial plan for healthcare before initiating the sponsorship. Many families are surprised by these costs after their parents arrive. Some families I know sponsor parents for the green card but the parents split their time between the US and home country — permanent residents must not stay outside the US for more than 6 months continuously without a re-entry permit.

    Documents needed per parent:

    1. Form I-130 + $535 fee each.
    2. Your US naturalization certificate or US passport.
    3. Your birth certificate showing your name and your parent’s name.
    4. Parent’s passport and birth certificate.
    5. Parent’s marriage certificate (to each other, if sponsoring both).
    6. Police clearances from all countries lived in since age 16.
    7. Medical exam results (Form I-693) by USCIS civil surgeon.
    8. Form I-864 showing your income — use most recent tax return.
    9. If income is insufficient, you need a joint sponsor. One I-864 can sponsor both parents if household size is adjusted accordingly.

I sponsored both my parents and the most stressful part was the I-864 Affidavit of Support. You must sponsor them financially, which means if they ever receive means-tested public benefits, the government can theoretically sue you to recover those costs. This obligation remains even if you divorce, they naturalize, or you otherwise change your relationship with them. Most Indian immigrant parents I know are independent and would never use public benefits, but the legal obligation is real and permanent. Also, my parents were over 70 so the medical exam was intensive — plan for a full day appointment at an authorized civil surgeon.

US citizens may sponsor both parents as Immediate Relatives, meaning there is no annual numerical cap on visas, which creates a relatively faster pathway. You must file separate Form I-130 petitions for each parent. The financial requirement is significant: your income must exceed 125% of the federal poverty guideline for your household size including the sponsored parents — for a household of three with two parents, approximately $35,000+ annually. Additionally, each parent will need a medical examination by a USCIS-designated physician, police clearances from all countries where they lived for more than 6 months after age 16, and evidence of your US citizenship. Total timeline is currently 18–30 months from filing to visa issuance for most countries.
